URWERK UR-230 Black Star replica watch
URWERK UR-230 Black Star
URWERK concludes its year with a profound black. The independent watchmaker presents the new UR-230 "Black Star" timepiece, a piece that doesn't chase light, but rather absorbs and consumes it—in order to better transform it into light in its own way.
Following the raw texture of carbon fiber CTP in the "Eagle" and the mineral-like white of ceramic in the "Polaris," the "Black Star" concludes the 230 trilogy with a cosmic vision. The curtain falls in vibrant black: as if in a gravitational field, light vanishes and is reborn in random shimmers.
Highly Protected Mechanism
This UR-230 "Black Star" timepiece is unique in many ways. First, its structure is stunning. The UR-7.30 movement that powers this watch is housed within a titanium case as secure as a mechanical safe. Surrounding this highly protected movement are a composite ceramic case and a black DLC-coated titanium case back, together forming the UR-230's exterior. “I adore the beauty of ceramic; it's simple, precise, and pleasing to the eye. This material is hard, lustrous, and elegant… but it's also extremely fragile. It can shatter at the slightest touch—but I didn't want to give up this material,” explains Felix Baumgartner, co-founder and master watchmaker of URWERK. “We had to find a solution that satisfied this desire without making any compromises.”

The original high-performance case of the UR-230 “Black Star” watch is made from a laminated composite ceramic developed by URWERK specifically for it: woven ceramic, glass fiber, and carbon fiber layers are cleverly fused within a polymer matrix. After processing, this unique ceramic exhibits a shimmering, embossed effect. Its smooth surface is adorned with sparkling points of light, creating a rich and vibrant texture under black light.
A Vibrant Darkness
“Polaris symbolizes the brightness of the North Star, while the Black Star belongs to the interstellar void,” says Martin Frey, Art Director and Co-founder of URWERK. “This blackness isn’t about concealment; it’s inherently vibrant, allowing light to emerge from the shadows. In astrophysics, a Black Star refers to the state of a collapsing star. At this point, the star absorbs light like a black hole, but not completely; it exists at the boundary between existence and demise in the universe. URWERK’s ‘Black Star’ embodies this paradox: a deep and vibrant black that doesn’t deny light but reveals it through shadow—a radiance originating from the core of the night.”
The Wandering Mechanic
The UR-230 “Black Star” watch perfectly embodies the essence of the URWERK brand. This new UR-230 watch features a satellite complication with wandering hour hands and retrograde 3D hands; a central hub connects three cube-shaped hour satellites. These three quadrilateral modules move within a 120° sector every 60 minutes. The current hour—the hour that rolls along the minute track—is controlled and guided by a skeletonized retrograde hand that accompanies its journey from 0 to 60. After 60 minutes, the hand immediately returns to zero to begin controlling the next minute.
Dual Turbine System
The UR-230 is an automatic winding watch tuned with a unique dual turbine system:
—It absorbs external shocks
While the other side regulates the airflow of the automatic winding mechanism, acting as a true aerodynamic brake.
The control knob on the back adjusts the rotor load and can even completely deactivate the rotor load, switching to manual winding mode.
Two symmetrical indicators—located at 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock respectively—display these settings.
This UR-230 "Black Star" marks the end of the 230 series. One story concludes, but a new adventure will begin in 2026…
